Fine Antiques & Collectibles. Silver & Enamel Cased Travelling Clock. A fine Art Deco period silver cased travelling clock by the famous Rotherham & Sons Ltd (of Coventry, England) watch and clock makers, and precision engineers. The case is a clamshell form which allows the clock to fold inside to keep safe while travelling. It is in heavy gauge silver with engine turned detail which has lovely powder blue colour enamelling. The hallmark is for Birmingham 1932 and has the makers mark in a lozenge. The mark is also repeated inside the case. Note: the case is solid silver, the clock bezel and back are silver plated. When you open the case fully you can still see the machine swirl marks where the case was machined to exactly the right size. The clock itself can also be removed for easier cleaning of the case by simply unscrewing a a large ring nut to the back. The winder is at the bottom of the dial and it has an 8 day movement. It winds and runs well and keeps good time aside running a little fast (about 5 mins per day). Although technically a travelling clock due to the form it is rather heavy for such a piece and not something you would carry if travelling light. If you staff to carry your luggage at the time (quite possible given how expensive an item this would have been) then of course this isn’t something the original owner would have worried about. A lovely example from this highly respected British maker. Very good for period. Clock runs well, gains just a few minutes per day. Slightest flaw to the enamel at one corner (shown). Some rubbing of the front hallmark. The odd very minor knock to the side panels. Overall wear is very low for the period.
